Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media, public speaker and Canadian. Feminist Frequency provides videos, commentary and analyses of how popular culture depicts women. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency is a site to educate women about their positions in the pop culture narratives was the result of her research. She also serves as the director of operations. Alongside working to bring awareness to the harassment and targeted assaults on women and as well as other minorities, she is dedicated to breaking the stereotypes prevalent in pop culture. Sarkeesian, who has an MA in Social and Political thought at York University, is a sought after public speaker. She has given speeches at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival and the United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. From an early age, Sarkeesian was fascinated by issues of gender identity as well as feminist ideas. While still at school in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency website. An ambitious woman who wanted to start a web-series examining the gender-based representation in video games was targeted in the internet campaign. But the assault did not deter her instead it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist media critic. Her notable contributions to the field of feminists have been recognized by numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the co-founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit focused on the portrayal of women within pop media and the narratives that surround them.
